Some books call for coffee. Others practically demand Champagne. And every now and then, a story leaves behind such a distinct mood that it seems only natural to pour something that lets you linger there a little longer.
That is the idea behind The Bookworm’s Bar Cart, a Sweet Holly Creates series pairing books with beverages inspired by the worlds within their pages. But this isn't simply a matter of matching a novel with a cocktail that happens to share its setting. The best pairings tell us something about the book.
A drink might reflect the atmosphere of a story—the sparkle of a Jazz Age party, the warmth of a cozy library or the salt air of a seaside summer. It might take its cue from a character, an important scene, or a particular place. Sometimes the connection is historical. Sometimes it is thematic. And sometimes it comes down to a feeling.
Reviews and Ratings
My inspiration for The Bookworm’s Bar Cart began with the lackluster vibes I personally feel from ratings reduced to a sum of stars. Those five-point figures can’t begin to capture the essence of a novel, its carefully constructed world, the characters that bring the book to life, or the work the author poured into its pages.
Better yet, how can you compare diverse genres with the same litmus test? Some authors lead with detailed settings that immerse you in faraway locales, others create complex characters that feel like a part of you, and others write page-turners that have you sprinting toward the final reveal. Every book is not made to be enjoyed the same way and therefore shouldn’t be judged in the same way.
This year, I decided to trade in my annual mad dash for a numerical book goal with the desire to slowly savor and experience what I read. Removing the pressured pace provided a pause where I could think about what I read and wonder what authors were grappling with through the plots and characters. I realized I had been reading at a shallow level and missing the joy of delving deeper and really appreciating someone’s work. This left me desiring a review system that went beyond a rating. One that would help me capture the atmosphere and reading experience.

The Tasting Cards
Not every book fits neatly into a single category. That is where the Tasting Cards come in.
Each Tasting Card begins with a Primary Pour—the drink that best captures the overall reading experience. A sweeping historical novel might earn a French 75, while a layered, reflective story could be Double Oaked. A true page-turner may land squarely in Espresso Martini territory.
But just like an actual tasting, there is usually more than one note to notice. A book can be primarily a French 75 and still carry a little Espresso Martini energy. It can feel Double Oaked at its core with the warmth and familiarity of a Cup of Tea around the edges. Those secondary notes help capture the nuances that make one reading experience different from another.
The cards are designed to do just that. Alongside the Primary Pour, each one captures the book’s Additional Tasting Notes, First Sip, core Tasting Notes, Setting the Scene, Best Enjoyed With, Perfect for Readers Who Love, and a final Final Sip—a quick look at what lingers after the last page.
Think of them less as traditional reviews or ratings and more as a record of the reading experience. There are no stars to count and no attempt to reduce a book to a score. Instead, the goal is to answer a much more interesting question:
What did this book feel like to read?
Because sometimes the best way to remember a story isn’t by ranking it. It’s by remembering the flavor it left behind.
