Book Review: The Academy by Elin Hilderbrand and Shelby Cunningham

As someone who has always been fascinated by novels set on the well-manicured grounds of elite boarding schools—whether they be Hogwarts or Easton Academy—I was delighted when renowned author Elin Hilderbrand announced her latest project. Elin brings her distinct style to a new genre and as someone well-read in this particular niche category, I must acknowledge a job well done. I will note its departure from her beloved Nantucket series and the addition of more Gen Z vibes—after all, she wrote the book with her daughter, Shelby. Some come expecting the Nantucket feel, but I have to attest that The Academy is best enjoyed as a blank slate. It’s less summer romance and more Gossip Girl meets Private.

The Vibe

My love for mood boards knows no bounds, and perhaps my favorite experience about this book was how realistic—from the settings to the characters—Elin and Shelby made you feel through their writing. At first, I wasn’t sure I would like it, especially given how much I adore her Nantucket novels. However, all it took was a few chapters and I was hooked. There’s salacious drama, digital scandal, decadent food descriptions, and a picturesque academic setting. I’m not one for plot spoilers so I’m keeping it vague. I found myself unexpectedly developing a soft spot for a character I didn’t immediately love, while also finding my first impressions confirmed for another. Even though the book covers the entire academic year, fall is by far the time to pick it up and savor its captivating story.

The Reading List

Elin Hilderbrand is an author I very much respect because she embodies the truth that the best writers are avid readers. You can tell in each of her books that she has a strong foundation in literature. In today’s publishing world, that’s not always the case so I find her credentials extra refreshing! By comparison, I don’t hold a candle to the volume of classics she’s read. However, she inspires me through the various authors and works she references to add to my TBR pile (as demonstrated above). I hope you’ll be inspired to add one or more to your book pile!
